Return-to-player (RTP) is the long-run percentage of all money wagered that a game pays back to players. A slot with a 96% RTP returns, on average, C$96 for every C$100 wagered across millions of spins — the remaining 4% is the house edge. RTP is a statistical average over a huge sample, not a promise for any single session: you can lose over a night on a 98% game or win big on a 94% one. Over time, though, a higher RTP genuinely stretches your bankroll further.
RTP tells you how much comes back; volatility tells you how. A high-volatility slot pays big but rarely; a low-volatility slot pays small and often. Two games can share a 96% RTP and feel completely different. Match volatility to your bankroll and patience.

Reputable casinos and game studios publish RTP in the game’s information or rules panel (the little "i" icon). Be aware that some slots ship with configurable RTP — the same game can be set to 96% at one casino and 94% at another. A published RTP is only credible if the random number generator behind it has been tested. We look for independent audit seals from eCOGRA, iTech Labs or GLI (Gaming Laboratories International), which verify both fairness and that the advertised RTP is real. The wagering requirement — also called playthrough — is the number of times you must bet a bonus before you can withdraw anything from it. It is where most of a bonus’s "value" quietly disappears. Here is a worked example in Canadian dollars:
You claim a C$100 bonus at 35× wagering. 35 × C$100 = C$3,500 that you must wager before the bonus and its winnings unlock. A bigger, C$200 bonus at 40× is actually C$8,000 to wager — often worse value than a smaller bonus with lower playthrough.

Because there is no single federal regulator for online casinos in Canada, almost every site that markets to Canadians outside Ontario and Alberta operates offshore. That is legal for you to use — the law targets unlicensed operators based in Canada, not individual players — but it does mean the quality of your protection depends entirely on the licence the casino actually holds. Two things Canadian players should know before they deposit. First, the legal gambling age is 19+ across most of Canada, but 18+ in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec — never trust a site that only says a blanket "18+". Second, recreational gambling winnings are tax-free in Canada: under the Income Tax Act (the windfall principle at s.40(2)(f)), a hobby player keeps the full amount and does not report it to the CRA.
