Ratings are aets.ca editorial scores — see our methodology. Bonuses shown in CAD and correct at our last check; confirm current terms on the operator's site. Operators are licensed offshore (typically Curaçao, Anjouan or Kahnawake) — not a Canadian provincial licence.

How baccarat works

Baccarat is one of the easiest casino games to play: you simply bet on which of two hands — Player or Banker — will total closest to 9, or on a Tie. The cards are dealt by fixed rules, so there are no decisions to agonise over, which is exactly why high rollers have loved it for a century.

The banker bet — and the bet to avoid

Betting on the banker has the lowest house edge at about 1.06% (after the standard 5% commission on banker wins), giving an RTP near 98.9%. The player bet is close behind at 1.24%. The tie bet, however, carries a punishing house edge of around 14% — avoid it. Live baccarat and Speed Baccarat are widely available at our live casinos.

How we test and rank casinos

We do not take an operator’s word for anything. For every casino we list, we open a real account, deposit our own money, play a full range of games, and — crucially — request and time a real withdrawal before we publish. We verify the licence number on the regulator’s public register, read the full terms and conditions for unfair clauses, test live chat, and check that balances and banking are genuinely in Canadian dollars. Sites that stall payouts, bury predatory bonus terms or fail KYC without cause are removed. The full scoring framework — weighting for payout speed, licensing, game fairness, bonus value and support — is published openly on our how we rate page, something almost none of our competitors offer.

Bonuses and wagering explained (with a real CAD example)

The wagering requirement — also called playthrough — is the number of times you must bet a bonus before you can withdraw anything from it. It is where most of a bonus’s "value" quietly disappears. Here is a worked example in Canadian dollars:

You claim a C$100 bonus at 35× wagering. 35 × C$100 = C$3,500 that you must wager before the bonus and its winnings unlock. A bigger, C$200 bonus at 40× is actually C$8,000 to wager — often worse value than a smaller bonus with lower playthrough.

Two more terms decide the real value: game weighting (slots usually count 100% toward wagering, but blackjack and roulette often count just 10% or even 0%) and the maximum cashout on no-deposit and free-spin offers. We rank bonuses by real value — low wagering, high or no cashout cap — not by the headline number. Compare them all on our casino bonuses page.

Fairness, audits and security

A licensed casino’s games are driven by a random number generator (RNG) that must be tested by an independent laboratory. We look for audit seals from eCOGRA, iTech Labs or GLI (Gaming Laboratories International), which confirm both that outcomes are genuinely random and that the advertised RTP is real. On the security side, insist on TLS/SSL encryption (the padlock in your browser), two-factor authentication on your account, and clear player-fund segregation so your balance is protected even if the operator hits trouble. We flag any casino missing these basics.

Licensing and safety: how Canadian players stay protected

Because there is no single federal regulator for online casinos in Canada, almost every site that markets to Canadians outside Ontario and Alberta operates offshore. That is legal for you to use — the law targets unlicensed operators based in Canada, not individual players — but it does mean the quality of your protection depends entirely on the licence the casino actually holds. We only list sites carrying a recognised licence and confirm the number on the regulator’s public register before publishing.

RegulatorWhat it means for you
Malta Gaming Authority (MGA)The gold standard offshore: strict player-fund segregation, independent dispute resolution and audited RNGs.
Kahnawake Gaming CommissionBased in the Mohawk Territory of Kahnawake near Montreal. Honest note: this is a Mohawk Nation regulator, not a Canadian provincial licence. It is long-established and reputable, but it is not iGaming Ontario or AGLC.
Curaçao (GCB / new LOK regime)The most common offshore licence. Quality varies, so we lean on our own testing and payout record here rather than the licence alone.
iGaming Ontario / AGCOThe one fully Canadian provincial regime for online casinos, live since 4 April 2022. Alberta launched its own open market in 2026.

Learn more about how we vet every site on our how we rate page, and read the honest breakdown on our Alberta open market guide.

The Canadian angle: age, tax and CAD

Two things Canadian players should know before they deposit. First, the legal gambling age is 19+ across most of Canada, but 18+ in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec — never trust a site that only says a blanket "18+". Second, recreational gambling winnings are tax-free in Canada: under the Income Tax Act (the windfall principle at s.40(2)(f)), a hobby player keeps the full amount and does not report it to the CRA. Only players whose gambling rises to the level of a business are taxed. We cover the details on our Canadian casino winnings tax guide.

Finally, insist on genuine CAD support. A true Canadian casino displays balances in Canadian dollars, banks in CAD through Interac e-Transfer, and does not silently convert your money to euros or USD at a poor rate.

How to get started

  1. Pick a baccarat casino from our ranked list above. Every casino we list is verified for licence and payout record.
  2. Register and verify (KYC). Enter your real name, date of birth and address, then upload ID early — before you win. This removes the single biggest cause of payout delays.
  3. Choose your payment method. Most Canadians pick Interac e-Transfer; crypto and e-wallets are faster still.
  4. Claim your bonus (optional). Read the wagering terms first — a headline number means nothing without them.
  5. Play baccarat, set a deposit limit, and cash out. Withdraw to the same method where possible for the smoothest, fastest payout.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best bet in baccarat?

The banker bet, with a house edge of about 1.06% after commission. The tie bet has a roughly 14% edge and is best avoided.

Why is there a commission on the banker bet?

The banker bet wins slightly more often than the player bet, so casinos take a 5% commission on banker wins to keep their edge. It's already built into the odds.

Is baccarat a game of skill?

Not really — the cards are dealt by fixed rules, so there are no decisions beyond which bet to place. Sticking to the banker bet is the whole 'strategy'.

Can I play live baccarat in Canada?

Yes. Live and Speed Baccarat stream in CAD from studios like Evolution. See our live casinos page.

What is Speed Baccarat?

A faster version with shorter betting and dealing times — a full round in about 27 seconds — for players who want more hands per hour.

Are baccarat winnings taxed in Canada?

No — recreational winnings are tax-free in Canada under the Income Tax Act windfall rule.
